The blog part 3. Bristol. No further breakdowns for Van…
We rolled into Bristol farting, and had a full day of rehearsal at the Babyhead/Yes Sir Boss music shack in Fishponds. Man it were smelly (thanks to us) but we got some proper work done on two brand new tracks before crashing into Hotwells to sleep.
The next day was the day of our gig at the Thekla – steaming hot, in and out of the tin box plugging wires and soundchecking. The doors opened and the people streamed in… Sickwax were supporting, and they smacked it for the first set, nice and tight for dancing. Then us.
Bristol knows how to love it up – it still feels like coming home for me after 10 years living away. We had people knowing the words, spilling their beers, waving their arms so I had to dive off the stage for a crowdsurf when Bomb Tesco dropped. The Thekla was a constant haunt for me as a teenager – I watched my first ever hiphop show there (Aspects, Swollen Members and Task Force) and it was the birthplace of Bad Science. I remember watching Blade dive off the same stage in 1999… Ah, ah. Lush to be there again.
Afterwards, a night that stomped us all round town and ending up in St Paul’s bogling, guts full of rum and old friendships. Ben falling off the steps with a daft expression and a short taxi ride to bed.
Here’s some pictures. The good ones of the Thekla gig are taken by the very talented Val Cornet...
