Well then. It’s happened. Happening. I’ve finally got Reach Out out reaching and people are sending me lovely messages. This isn’t a story of number ten hits and publicity teams, but it feels very good to get the first song from the album out, and my mum likes it. The next single, Bomb Tesco, is ready too, and waiting to be revealed in a few weeks’ time. I’m loving the idea of making a video for this next song- the supermarket exploding into music, the people playing jams on tin cans and slapping cheese for the sound it makes. Some of you might have heard a very early version of this track on my myspace site- the Mr Simmonds production. This new one is very different, full of crockery beats and voices from the freezer aisle. I’ll let you know the release date for that as soon as I’ve decided.
I’m sat in my new home of New Cross, London, listening to Chester P’s 2008 mixtape album (yes it’s heavy) and thinking London thoughts. People here cycle FAST and drive slowly, traffic light to traffic light. I’m bike-winding my way through the traffic with a high visibility torso, and a steady stream of cyclists is overtaking me, heads down and eyes set. I thought I was quite speedy like… But not here. I have to decide whether to shift gear and catch up with the Capital City pace, or retain my Brighton-crafted slowness in spite of it all. Ah. Chester P is on full form and spitting out stories, here in my pants in my bedroom. The best place, the best clothes to listen to mindbending hiphop in.
Maybe an opportunity to tell you about the Rebel Cell, if you don’t already know. It’s a hiphop theatre show that I wrote last year alongside Baba Brinkman, and this year we’re taking it back up to the Edinburgh Festival with Jamie Simmonds on the decks and some extra dope visuals and music all the way through. If you want to hear the album of the show for free (and download it for a donation), go to www.babasword.com and check it out: beats by Tom Caruana, Mr Simmonds and Infinite Potential, and an hourlong story of England in the year 2013. There’s been a massive terrorist attack on the London Olympics, and the state has swung into fascist control, opening a huge prison camp at Glastonbury and handing the nightly news over to the BNPBC. Dizraeli is a revolutionary on trial, and Baba’s the journalist sent to interview him… I think you might like it. We’re in rehearsal at the moment, and heading to perform it at the Hullabaloo venue at the Festival from the 7th of August onwards.
Well, that’s enough ramble. Keep your heads up and keep sending me your messages through the Contact link, it’s wicked to hear your words of encouragement.
Peace and oneness.
Dizraeli
